This is the first of many, many posts in a series that I am going to call “Goal Making Repetition”. There will be some regularity to these posts but I am also going to be continuing my “Life with out Dad” series of posts as well as some out of cycle posts that are not necessarily part of a series.
Lets be honest — live is a never ending (mostly) repetitious routine of events and goal making.
For me the last five months has been mostly filled with the repetitious events involved with starting a business and working a part time job (at the local Domino’s Pizza) to help me pay off some credit card debt I got myself into, but that is a story for another time! In that time, I have also been very busy starting my business owner but also preparing to be a (long overdue, more on this later) college graduate and making goals that come along with both of these amazing milestones.
I decided to start my own business after struggling for over a year to even walk away from my job search with at least one interview per week; most months not even walking away with two interviews. So back in early April, as I was getting looking for a new roommate and apartment I decided I was done looking for a job in the “buyers” job market that we live in due to economic constraints; these two decisions meant the dominoes were falling into place, so to speak, for me to start up my own website development agency. This is something I have thought about doing for some time but never could make the time to actually invest in finding projects and/or building a site for myself because I was always writing cover letters and sending out resumes.
The biggest thing that happened that allowed me to make the decision was that I was able to work things out between myself and my mom and make the situation at home livable again. There was never any good reason she should have been alone in a 5 bed/4 bath house to begin with but when two people can not coexist without yelling at each other on a regular basis they should not be living together. It does not matter who the two people are that is an unhealthy living situation if the people are friends, coworkers, family (as was the case with my mom and I), or acquaintances.
So ultimately, after over a year of no luck in the job market and getting a few projects to help me keep up with bills I decided it was time to forget looking for a job and put my full effort into finding more freelance work and getting a web development agency started up. The website is going up within the next couple weeks and then it is onward and upward…. time to advertise and find enough work to make it a full time job!
In a perfect world, I would already be on my way but things never work out exactly how we plan for them to! That being said, I should be well on my way very soon.
The story of my overdue college graduation:
Finally, after 3 years of delays due to rebelling (I will share this story later in a short three part series of posts) I will be graduating college in December and doing so with a B.S. in Interactive & Social Media as well as a certificate in Website Design & Development.
A couple of goals for the coming months and years:
Currently, my top goal is to not be forced to work (in order to help pay off some debt) at Domino’s come the end of the year and be able to invest more of my time on a weekly basis into getting my business off the ground. Does this mean I will completely quit from Domino’s, most likely not.. it merely means that right now I have no choice because I am not yet making enough money to guarantee I will be able to pay at least the minimum on my credit card every month and still have money left over to feed myself!
You may be asking yourself, “Why don’t you quit from Domino’s once your credit card is paid off.” There are actually two reasons and both lead to the other two goals I want to make to conclude this post!
So here goes, I have a good deal of dental work that I need done which will be topped off with getting braces and my goal is to have this work completed in the next couple of years; finally, I have loads of student loans I figure that the more hours I put in doing everything I am currently doing the sooner I will be able to relax and have a life so my hope is that in the next 5 years I will pay off the majority of, if not all of my student loans.
In order to accomplish these goals, especially the last two as fast as possible I feel that I will need to keep working at Domino’s (or a similar job), for 12-25 hours per week on the side of running my business to bring in more money and make these things happen faster!
